Tourism New Zealand's latest marketing campaign is taking to the skies.

In a campaign that melds social media, the ''selfie'' picture phenomenon and drone technology, tourists in South Island winter holiday hot spots will be buzzed by a remote-controlled flying camera, or drone, which will take videos as it flies.

The footage will then be loaded to social media using the hashtag #NZDronie.

The campaign is targeting Australian tourists and is part of Tourism New Zealand's winter holiday push in Australia, dubbed ''More magic in every day''.

Tourism New Zealand's general manager, Australia, Tony Saunders says: ''We hope it will add another dimension to the way people share their holiday memories.''

The so-called ''dronie'' sensation was started by Twitter at the Cannes Lions creative communications awards in France, in a launch involving British actor Sir Patrick Stewart, last month.

The drone will be in Queenstown today, ski areas Coronet Peak and Cardrona on Friday and Saturday, Tekapo on Sunday and Monday, Mt Cook on Tuesday and Canterbury ski area Mt Hutt next Wednesday.
