Restorer buys railway station

Oamaru's historic wooden railway station has been sold to a North Island buyer, who is passionate about preserving heritage buildings.

But the Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust is revealing neither the price nor the name of the buyer at this time.

Final settlement is not due until almost the end of next month,Trust chairman Peter Garvan yesterday announced the sale for the Heritage NZ category 2-listed property had gone unconditional on Thursday afternoon.

The purchaser had confirmed in writing his purchase of the property was motivated by an interest in historic New Zealand buildings.

''He intends to maintain the exterior features and appearance of the main building as the Oamaru railway station,'' Mr Garvan said.

He would be manage a series of projects, including making the building watertight, levelling floors, completing piling and other jobs.

There were also plans to restore the station's interior as close as possible to its glory days.

Heritage NZ and Waitaki district plan protection meant any alterations would require resource consent, including approval from Heritage NZ.

Mr Garvan said the proceeds from the sale would be used for major projects or property acquisition.
