Nelson Judge Peter Lyall checks out a hard-feathered bantam, helped by recorder Serena O'Brien (12), of Oamaru, during the first day of the Oamaru Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Society's annual show in the Drill Hall yesterday. It continues today from 9am to 4pm.

There were 760 entries for the show. Numbers have declined slightly in recent years, which president Clinton O'Brien put down to the loss of some of the society's older exhibitors. Increasing interest was coming from younger people, particularly lifestyle block owners, and he hoped they would get involved in exhibiting and helping run the show.

However, next year will be different because the society will stage the national show over three days from July 18, when exhibitors from throughout New Zealand are expected to fill the Drill Hall with about 2000 birds.
