Accused elects jury trial

A 55-year-old Oamaru man pleaded not guilty to 74 historic sexual abuse and assault charges and elected trial by jury in the Timaru District Court yesterday.

Yesterday, police said they no longer supported name suppression, but defence lawyer Rupert Glover said his client wanted it continued to protect his family, who still lived in Oamaru.

Judge Joanna Maze continued name suppression, but a separate hearing will be held to consider that issue at 10am on October 7.

There will also be a hearing of a bail variation application on October 7.

He was remanded on bail, with conditions not to go to Oamaru.

His jury trial has been set down to start on October 23.

He faces charges of performing an indecent act on a girl (aged 12-16), unlawful sexual connection, male assaults female, male rapes female (12-16), performing an indecent act upon a girl (12-16), attempted rape of a female (12-16), indecently assaulting a female (aged 12-16), indecently assaulting a female (over 16), attempted unlawful sexual connection, sexual connection with a child, sexual connection with a young person, assault with a blunt instrument, performing an indecent act with intent to insult, performing sexual intercourse with a female (12-16) and attempted sexual intercourse with a female.

The sexual offending, is alleged to have occurred between 1999 and 2011.
