School invited to UK rugby match

Waitaki Boys' High School has been invited to watch a rugby game in England to mark the 100th anniversary of World War 1.

Waitaki High School Old Boys' Association secretary-treasurer Hilary Bishop said the invitation was to the game between rival universities Oxford and Cambridge, at Twickenham in December.

It will commemorate the 27 Oxford and 28 Cambridge rugby Blues who lost their lives in the war. One of them, Waitaki old boy Lieutenant George Chapman, attended Caius College, Cambridge, gaining his Varsity Blue in 1907.

The game organisers asked rector Paul Jackson, school pupils, members and old boys to attend.

A former captain of the Waitaki Boys' First XV, Lt Chapman was a doctor who was killed trying to rescue a comrade in May, 1915.

''There will be a very meaningful and public tribute on match day, and the game will be shown live on Sky TV, and each player will be commemorated over the next four years on the day of their death,'' Ms Bishop said.

Mr Chapman attended the school from 1898 to 1904.
