Shop, school take action after theft

Two cakes of chocolate proved costly for a group of teenage girls who were disciplined by the Oamaru shop they stole them from and then by their school.

Seven Waitaki Girls' High School pupils were in The Warehouse about 8.40am when the school had a late start on Wednesday, police said.

One of them stole two cakes of chocolate worth $8.98 while the others looked on.

The seven were issued with trespass notices by the shop, which bans them from entering it for two years.

The school followed up by standing them down.

Deputy principal Adrienne Lambeth said the pupils had been stood down for two or three days after the school had discussed their actions with them.

Along with the way police and the store had handled the matter, she felt they had been dealt with appropriately.
