Oamaru's Rainbow Colour Run is back for 2014 and, building on the success of the inaugural event, it will be open to more participants, with more paint and more colour.

On October 18, the Oamaru Racecourse will be covered in a burst of different colours as 1000 people wearing white clothing walk, jog or run around a 5km course.

At each kilometre mark a different colour of powder will be thrown in the air and the participants will become a constantly evolving artwork.

Last year, the event was limited to 600 entries.

This year, another 400 have been opened up and Sport Waitaki co-ordinator Kate Holland thinks they will get 1000 registrations ''easily''.

''It was such a success last year and we want to build on that and try and get people along that perhaps saw the event, but didn't attend,'' Miss Holland said.

''This year, we want them to realise that they can do it and they can have a great day out.''

The Rainbow Colour Run has no official times or winners. It was a fun way to introduce people to healthy lifestyles and Miss Holland encouraged people to register early to avoid missing out on the enjoyable way to exercise.

''Last year, people came from all over the South Island for it,'' she said.

Aa large number came from Christchurch and others from Invercargill.

Miss Holland said other sporting bodies in the South Island were now organising colour runs - having been inspired by the Oamaru event's success and popularity.

''I think the thing that's so awesome about the Oamaru event is that we keep it so affordable, it's $10 per person, or $30 for a family, and we can keep it so cheap because of the sponsorship and donations from the community,'' she said.

''It's fantastic that everyone is so enthusiastic about it. They've seen the success of last year and they all want to be on board.''

In the lead up to the event, the Waitaki Recreation Centre is launching a ''Couch to Rainbow'' training programme next week.

''If you can walk for 20 minutes and have always wanted to be able to run 5km ... `Couch to Rainbow' is awesome support, encouragement and training in a group environment to make sure that everyone achieves the goal of running the Rainbow Run,'' she said.
