Council, businesses agree on Harbour St upgrade

Historic Harbour St is to be upgraded under a timetable aimed at causing the least disruption possible to businesses in the street.

Business owners and the Waitaki District Council have agreed on a plan to carry out rehabilitation work, which will include improving sub-surface drainage, stabilising the pavement and resealing.

The parties met on Wednesday night to discuss the work and Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher appreciated the positive approach by businesses to get the work scheduled.

''I know our team and the contractors are very focused on doing what they can to minimise disruption.

''If people have any concerns, I would encourage them to contact either myself or our roading team,'' he said yesterday.

The work was scheduled to be completed by Labour Weekend and was estimated to take three weeks.

For two of those weeks, Harbour St will be closed to vehicular traffic, although footpaths will remain open.

Roading manager Michael Voss said it was essential the upgrade be completed when the weather was likely to be more settled.

''We attempted to upgrade Harbour St in May, but experienced inclement weather with heavy periods of rain, so we were unable to complete the work.

''The meeting we have had with business owners has resulted in compromises being made so that the work will be completed with as little disruption as possible.

''We are very grateful to the business owners for their co-operation in finalising a suitable date.''

The upgraded road would have a lifespan of 30 years and would require maintenance every 10-12 years, he said.
