Voting slow in by-election

VOTES are slow coming in to elect a councillor to represent the Corriedale ward on the Waitaki District Council, with a week to go before voting closes.

At 10am yesterday, 968 votes, representing 31% of 3082 eligible voters, had been returned.

Electoral officer Anthony Morton is urging electors who are yet to vote to return their papers either by post this week or by delivering them in person to the council's Oamaru office in Thames St to ensure they are received before voting closes at noon next Wednesday.

Anyone who had not received or had lost their voter pack should phone the 0508 666-003 election helpline or contact the Oamaru council office, Mr Morton said.

A preliminary result for the by-election will be released after midday next Wednesday.

Two people are standing: Fuchsia Creek resident Guy Percival and Oamaru resident Jock Howie.
