Entertainer Mike King and sportsman Tai Tupou shared their experiences of depression - how they turned their lives around and the tools they used to get to a better place - with an assembly of St Kevin's College pupils yesterday afternoon.

They also spoke at a community evening at the Brydone Hotel in Oamaru yesterday, having already visited schools and community groups in Maniototo and Central Otago.

Today, they will stop in at Waitaki Boys' High School and East Otago High School, before a rural community night at the Kurow Memorial Hall at 7.30pm.

The two men's trip is aimed at effecting positive change concerning suicide prevention and suicide awareness.

Mr King shares his story of wanting to fit in, going from being bullied to being a bully at school, and his struggles with alcohol and depression, while Mr Tupou talks about going through depression after life as a young, popular guy on the verge of signing with the Warriors.

The talks are funded by Mr King's own charity, the Key To Life Trust, supported in Waitaki by Safer Waitaki.

Community safety and development facilitator Helen Algar said she was ''thrilled'' Mr King and Mr Tupou had made the time to visit Waitaki.

''It's a critical issue and the quality of their presentations is exceptional,'' Mrs Algar said.
