Oamaru police are urging residents to contact them, or ring 111, at the time they see any suspicious activity, following several burglaries in the town.

In the most recent reports, there were two burglaries on Wednesday night in Chelmer St.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy said a shed was entered and home brew items stolen from a freezer, and two figures were spotted on the roof of the Chelmer St Discounters store. They tried but failed to get into the store.

''Someone saw them [on the roof] but no-one rang [police],'' Snr Sgt McCoy said.

''If people do see suspicious activity, please do call police and if it is figures, like people on roofs or out and about, do ring 111 because we will try and apprehend them if we can.''

Snr Sgt McCoy issued a reminder to Oamaru residents to ensure houses, outbuildings and garages were locked to deny opportunistic thieves the opportunity to take their items.

Wednesday night's offending came after the theft of a petrol can and wilful damage of a caravan and a car in Wharfe St on Monday.

Police believe there are ''pockets'' of different offenders involved in the recent theft and burglary offences.
