Police are following positive lines of inquiry after threats were made to a security guard at the Oamaru Work and Income New Zealand office on Tuesday.

Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said a complaint was filed by Winz staff just after 4pm on Tuesday and police were continuing their investigations yesterday, following positive lines of inquiry.

''Someone was disgruntled in the office there, not happy having to wait for something, and took it out on the security guard,'' Sgt Woodbridge said.

The alleged offender had left when police arrived at the Winz office on Tuesday afternoon.

''There's obviously heightened tension with what happened up in Ashburton, but the public have got to understand that all [staff of] government agencies are just doing their job,'' Sgt Woodbridge said.
