Geologists study cliff face for cause of second slip

An engineering geologist was lowered down a Kakanui cliff face along Beach Rd south of Oamaru yesterday morning to inspect the site of a second slip of limestone into the sea.

Waitaki District Council assets group manager Neil Jorgensen said Geosolve senior engineering geologist Mark Walrond and geologist James Griffiths examined the cliff face to check its stability following the early-September slip.

''We are just gathering more information to understand more about how the rock in the area holds up over time and assess what that means for the road.''

The inspection found no major cracks but the council would have more details when the full report from Geosolve was ready next week.

After the second slip along Beach Rd, in early September, the council placed cones along the edge to keep traffic away from the shoulder where the cliff face has slipped into the sea, as well as acting as a visible warning should more of the shelf break away.

The second slip, where the sea has undercut limestone below Beach Rd, calving great chunks of rock into the sea, is not far north from where it did the same thing in May, exacerbated by heavy rain and sodden soil on top, reducing the roadway to a single lane.

The council has been looking at various options for the road since the first slip, including negotiating with a landowner in an attempt to move it further inland.
