All Kakanui and Reidston water scheme consumers are getting more and better quality water from the Oamaru water supply as from yesterday.

To provide water which meets the latest drinking water standards for about 650 people, the Waitaki District Council decided connecting to the Oamaru treatment plant was the best and cheapest option.

Residents in north Kakanui have been enjoying the better quality water for up to a week, but yesterday the final connection was made for south Kakanui and Reidston consumers and the valve turned on for Oamaru water to replace that from the Kakanui River.

A 150mm piped supply from Oamaru was connected at a three-way junction south of the bridge.

Water was piped across the bridge to the T-junction, where it was joined to existing 100mm connections running east to south Kakanui and west to the Kakanui reservoir which supplies Reidston.

Consumers who want to clean and flush their systems can get information from the council or its website.

The project, part of upgrading district water schemes to drinking water standards, cost about $600,000.

Kakanui's wastewater will also be connected to Oamaru's, at a cost of about $300,000, so as to use the treatment plant in TY Duncan Rd.

That is expected to be completed shortly.david.bruce@odt.co.nz
