Winners of the years 9-10 category are Timaru Boys' High School pupils (from left) Cameron Ellis, Hayden McNulty and David Ellis (all 14).

Twins were two-thirds of a winning trio in last night's Otago Daily Times Extra! Central South Island Current Events Quiz in Timaru.

Timaru Boys' High School took top honours in the years 9-10 category.

Between them, Cameron Ellis, David Ellis and Hayden McNulty have won 11 titles in the Otago Daily Times Extra! current events and spelling quizzes since their primary school days.

The Ellis twins had previously won titles for Wakanui School and Ashburton Intermediate School, while David had represented Hinds School.

The boys said they were happy with last night's result and looking forward to concentrating on study next year.

Their team scored 96 points out of 100 in last night's quiz. Roncalli College was second with 87 points.

However, it was down to the wire for third with two Ashburton College teams and a Mountainview High School team locked on 86 points.

It went to rounds of single questions with Mountainview emerging triumphant after five questions.

Quiz co-ordinator and Extra! editor Ivan Behrnes said the quiz was a mixed bag of world mapping, flag identification, history, photo identification, and general knowledge.

''It's pretty comprehensive. It has covered everything that has been in the Extra!'' Contestants battled it out over 10 rounds.

One hundred and eighty pupils had formed 60 teams to represent 14 schools from across Mid and South Canterbury.
