A 57-year-old Dunedin man escaped without injury after he drove this camper van into the side of a train at Waianakarua yesterday afternoon.

Senior Constable Wayne Brew, of Hampden, said the man was driving east along Bluff Hill Rd, about 2.40pm, when he came to the railway crossing.

He started to brake, looked to the right, but did not see the southbound train approaching from his left.

The impact shunted the camper van around into the side of the engine and thenoff to the side of the road.

It took about 300m to 400m for the train to stop. The camper van driver was shaken but not hurt.

The Fire Service was called to mop up diesel spilled from the train's fuel tank, which was ruptured in the crash.
