Children angling to catch a salmon or trout have filled all 200 places in a competition on Sunday encouraging them to go fishing.

The Lower Waitaki Irrigation Co Take a Kid Fishing competition started again last year, and was such a hit that 156 entries for this year's event were received when they opened on Monday.

Oamaru Sports and Outdoors Ltd director Richard Hill said the remaining 44 places went yesterday.

Names were still being taken to fill any vacancies from cancellations.

''We have had kids asking for the last six to eight weeks when the competition was going to be on,'' he said.

''It's all about the kids.''

The event is at Eckholds Pond, and was revived last year by Sonya and Mark Eckhold.

On Monday, 600 salmon, up to 3kg, were added to the trout already in the pond, giving the young anglers good odds of catching a fish and winning a prize.

Fishing starts at 10am and the prizegiving will be at 1pm, at the pond, at the Waitaki River end of McPherson Rd.
