Oamaru Whitestone Civic Trust trustee Allan Dick has resigned, citing himself as ''the proverbial square peg in a round hole''.

Elected to the board by trust members in March, Mr Dick apologised for his failure to see out the term and said his decision to resign came after much soul-searching.

Although he did not want to go in to details on his ''Oamaru Today'' Facebook page, Mr Dick told the Otago Daily Times yesterday he had resigned for a number of reasons, including ongoing friction between the trust board and its tenants which was not being resolved, a need to involve the community more in its activities and the way the trust had handled its sale of the Oamaru railway station.

The Auckland buyer had withdrawn from the sale, forfeiting his deposit, and the trust was now threatening legal action.

''I also have other things I want to get on with and I found [the difficulties with] the trust distracting and debilitating,'' he said.

Trust chairman Mr Garvan said Mr Dick's resignation was formally accepted on Wednesday.

The trust had yet to decide how to fill the vacancy, but a decision was likely by the trust, after checking its constitution, at an October 21 meeting. With an election due next March, the vacancy could be left open.

Mr Garvan said Mr Dick had made a valuable contribution while on the board and it was sad to lose him.

Mr Dick had said he would continue to be involved in the Targa South Island stop-over in the historic precinct on October 28 and 29 and the Victorian fete.
