The bridge at the mouth of Oamaru Creek is likely to be closed and removed because of its poor condition.

Waitaki District Council assets group manager Neil Jorgensen said the bridge had been closed to vehicles for some time but used as a footbridge, but a recent inspection by the council's bridge engineer found it was no longer safe for any use.

''Although the bridge looks strong, the wooden piles are completely rotten and the abutments that the concrete deck is sitting on are also in poor condition,'' he said.

''We do not want to put anyone in danger and the bridge is no longer safe for any type of use, even by people out walking.''

The council was not planning to replace the bridge with a new pedestrian bridge, estimated to cost $120,000.

However, anyone could submit to the council's long-term plan requesting a replacement be considered.

The council will call for public submissions early next year.
