Pupils from five Waitaki primary schools are being encouraged to get moving next week.

Ardgowan, Fenwick, Kakanui, St Joseph's and Weston school pupils will join more than 6000 others from schools around the region in adopting active transport methods for Walk n Wheel Week.

Sport Waitaki co-ordinator Kate Holland said pupils were encouraged to walk, bike or scooter to school.

Children who caught the bus or were driven to school by their parents could also take part by walking for at least 10 minutes during their school day.

Using active transport to and from school had a wide range of benefits for the pupils and the wider community, Miss Holland said.

''When kids are having fun with their friends and family, unwittingly they are improving their health and fitness while learning and utilising their road safety skills,'' she said.

Walk n Wheel Week raised awareness of the importance of using active forms of transport for health and general wellbeing, she said.

Each pupil at the five Waitaki schools will receive a card to keep to keep track of their progress and each class with more than 80% participation will go in the draw to win prizes.

Prizes include a school visit from the Oamaru Ordinary Cycle Club with a range of bicycles and a selection of sports equipment from Oamaru Sports and Outdoors.

Sport Waitaki will be visiting participating schools with spot prizes for students using active transport.
