Dog attacks lessen following patrols

An increase in targeted animal control patrols is reducing dog attacks in the Waitaki District, regulatory services manager Lichelle Guyan says.

In January, the Waitaki District Council expressed concern about an increasing number of dog attacks.

The district's animal control division received 58 reports in two weeks, 60% of those about wandering dogs.

Seven attacks were also reported in those two weeks. Four attacks were on stock and other dogs, and three were on people.

In two cases, medical treatment was sought and in all attacks the offending dog was a mastiff-cross.

Two charges have been filed with the courts about an incident in Eden St on January 5, where a dog was seriously injured in an attack by another dog.

Mrs Guyan said at the start of the school year, animal control officers started daily patrols around school areas, which were the source of several complaints.

''It's proved to be quite positive ... we had good feedback and it was noted that dog owners were acting responsibly,'' she said.

Numbers of complaints had reduced to more ''normal'' levels and school patrols were continuing, but not every day, Mrs Guyan said.

''They are still there and the more visible they are, the more aware people are,'' she said.

''We're heading back to our normal level of complaints ... it's a good position to be in.''

More information will also be distributed to owners when registering a dog with the council, she said.

Details about the dog control bylaw can be viewed on the council website.
