Hearings facility reopening

Court sittings will return to the Oamaru Hearings Facility next week, after air-quality tests showed the facility is safe and chemical readings are well within acceptable levels.

The Humber St facility was temporarily closed earlier this month after staff reported feeling unwell because of a chemical smell in a staff area.

Ministry of Justice district courts general manager Tony Fisher said he was confident the measures the ministry had taken would address any air-quality issues.

''It seems the combination of the very hot summer sun and the facility being closed for most of the time caused the smell,'' he said.

''We have installed additional venting and extraction fans and will keep monitoring the facility.''

He thanked all court users, the judiciary, lawyers, police and Corrections staff for their patience.

''I acknowledge the disruption to hearings in Oamaru and thank our staff for bringing this issue to our attention and working to ensure justice service continued to be delivered,'' he said.

Family Court matters are scheduled to be heard at the facility on April 2 and the next criminal court list day will take place on April 15.

Disputes Tribunal hearings were yesterday held at Brydone Hotel, due to the ministry's expansion project to install interview rooms at the facility.
