A crowd of about 100 gathered for the annual Glenavy Salmon Run on the Waikakahi Stream on Saturday.

Organised by Chris Paul, the race started at Te Maiharoa Rd and finished just short of where the stream runs into the Waitaki River west of the State Highway 1 bridge.

This is the second year of the community fundraiser. Mr Paul came up with the idea last year and imported numbered plastic fish from China.

The top prize this year of $500 for the first fish home was won by Hamish Scott, of Timaru. All proceeds go to the Glenavy Volunteer Fire Brigade towards the purchase of a St John first response kit.
