Oamaru artist Donna Demente with the ''share certificate'' she has designed to be sold to raise money to protect Waitaki River flows.

The certificates are for ''shares'' in the river.

The idea has come from the Lower Waitaki River Management Society as one way to fund its fight against a proposal to lower the minimum flow in the river.

Ms Demente has been involved in protecting the river since the Project Aqua power scheme was first mooted in 2001.

The ''shares'' offer 1cumec of water in the river for $100.

The society has printed 150 certificates, which will help it oppose a change to the Waitaki catchment water allocation regional plan being promulgated by Environment Canterbury (ECan).

When public submissions were called on the plan change, 550 were received, with 80% opposed to the proposed changes.

The society may need up to $50,000 to mount a major defence, and an appeal late last year for donations has raised only between $2000 and $3000.

Shares can be bought through the society or PledgeMe.
