Emergency services had a busy time in the Waimate district yesterday, attending two crashes in a three-hour period.

About 3.30pm, a Waimate fire crew and police responded to a quad bike accident in Serpentine Valley Rd, in an area accessible only by four-wheel-drive vehicles.

The bike rolled about 10m down a bank, a Fire Service spokesman said.

The 46-year-old man was believed to have a leg injury and was taken to Timaru Hospital by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter.

A hospital nurse, who declined to be identified, said the man was ''doing fine and being kept at the hospital''.

Less than two hours later, Waimate emergency services and the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter were called to the scene of a logging truck crash in Parkers Bush Rd.

The truck rolled down a hill ''nose first into a creek'', Waimate Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer Duncan Lyall said.

When emergency services personnel arrived, they found the 31-year-old driver had not moved from the vehicle because of his injuries, a police spokesman said.

Fire services cut the door off the truck and rescued the driver, who was transported to Christchurch Hospital by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter with a possible back injury.

A hospital spokesman said the man's condition was ''serious but stable''.
