Tour, talk at gallery to explain redevelopment plan

Ryana tour and talk will be held at the Forrester Gallery to explain in more detail the proposed cultural facility redevelopment project to have the gallery, North Otago Museum and Waitaki District Archive all on the same site.

On April 21, the public will have the opportunity to hear more about the $4.5 million project being considered as part of the Waitaki District Council 2015-25 Long Term Plan and give feedback.

Should the redevelopment go ahead, the Forrester Gallery will be developed to house the gallery, North Otago Museum and the archive.

Seventy percent of funding for the project will be externally sourced and the project will only go ahead if that money is secured.

Waitaki District Council community services group manager Thunes Cloete said the district had a rich history of local stories and events and the proposal would create a venue that could express the stories in ''remarkable'' ways.

''This is very much a community project so it's important that people make their views known,'' he said.

''We have presented other options in the discussion document that is now out for consultation. Our favoured option would cost $1.3 million for ratepayers.''

Submissions close on April 24.
