The former Otepopo School building and grounds are now being offered for sale by tender, after the Ministry of Education backed down on demolishing the building last year.

Otepopo School, which had the distinction of being the oldest school in North Otago, closed on September 24, 2010.

On 1.23ha of land in Ross Rd, Herbert, the property consists of the old school building (a large classroom), playing fields and a tennis court.

The sale is being handled by LJ Hooker Oamaru and the property is being offered for tender.

It has a rateable value of $305,000.

A decision was made to use the Public Works Act disposal process to demolish the school buildings, at a cost of $38,000.

The Ministry of Education said, in its experience, former school buildings were ''rarely versatile enough for other potential uses'' and it was preferable for potential buyers that they were removed or demolished before sale of the land.

Demolition was to start on December 1 last year, but concerns were raised by the Herbert community about the process and a lack of communication, and demolition was cancelled.

The property - the land and building as a package - was then offered to Ngai Tahu, which declined to buy it.
