Explosive substance found in Oamaru scrapyard

A part of Oamaru's industrial area was cordoned off and part of the main southern main trunk line, after an explosive substance was found in a bucket at a scrapyard this morning.

Police received the call from Everitt Enterprises in Industrial Pl, about 10am.

An area of about 300m around the yard was cordoned off and evacuated while police awaited the arrival of an expert army explosives team from Burnham, near Christchurch.

Two members of the army team arrived about 1.45pm, made the explosives safe and took them away for disposal. The street was cleared just after 2pm. 

All trains scheduled to pass through the area on the main trunk line were stopped durng the incident.
