Still seeking information

Police will continue inquiries into alleged sex offences if any further complaints are received against a former Oamaru man, after adding eight further charges this week to 48 he already faces.

Frank Russell Walmsley (56), life coach, appeared in the Christchurch District Court before Judge Gary MacAskill on Thursday to face the new charges which go back about 15 years and involve offences committed in Oamaru.

They result from allegations by one complainant of seven sexual violations by rape and one of unlawful sexual connection.

Yesterday, a police spokesman - when asked by the Otago Daily Times if inquiries were complete or if further charges might still be laid - said: ''Police will continue to make inquiries on any information we receive.''

The 48 original charges relate to alleged offences between 1999 and 2012 involving five complainants in Oamaru while Walmsley was working in various positions, including as a carer.

When originally charged in December, Walmsley had interim name suppression, but that was lifted in December when police asked for him to be identified in case anyone who had interacted with Walmsley was able to help inquiries.

Walmsley's trial on the original charges was scheduled for the Timaru District Court in February, but was adjourned.

A pre-trial appearance has been set down in Timaru in July and a trial for some time later this year.

It was probable the latest eight charges would be joined with the original ones for the trial.

When Walmsley appeared on Thursday, his bail was renewed without opposition.

It was granted on the condition Walmsley did not contact named people, travel to Oamaru and that he surrender his passport.

Walmsley was remanded on bail to appear again in the Christchurch District Court on June 3 on the new charges.
