Oamaru acts rocked the Theatre Royal in Timaru on Friday night with soloist Joseph Balfe and four piece band Oamaru Kudos emerging the winners at the Smokefreerockquest regional final.

Waitaki Boys' High School pupil Joseph Balfe won the solo/duo section, as well as a musicianship award, while Kudos came first in the band section.

It was ''amazing'' for Oamaru to have two acts take top honours at the Timaru final, competing against acts from 12 high schools from Oamaru to Methven, Kudos band members said.

Kudos performed its originals City No Rain and Enemy.

For band members Joe Martin, Jack Sinclair, Shaun Andales and Alex McCulloch, playing as a four piece band was a ''different'' experience.

In 2014, Kudos was victorious at the Timaru regional Rockquest final, but as a six piece band. Shannon Martin and Kyle Andales were too old to compete this year.

Joseph and Kudos now compete for places in the national final by submitting a 15 minute performance video to be judged by industry professionals.
