Three horses set free from St Kevin's College could have caused problems wandering the streets at night, Oamaru police said yesterday.
A gate to a paddock at the school, which runs an equestrian centre for its pupils, was lifted off its hinges about 8pm on Wednesday to let the horses out to roam in darkness.
They were found later on the neighbouring Centennial Park sports grounds by grounds staff and returned to the school.
Police asked for information about people acting suspiciously in the area at that time.
