Appointed to water committee

Omarama farmer Richard Subtil joins three community representatives reappointed to an upper Waitaki catchment water committee under the auspices of Environment Canterbury.

They Upper Waitaki Zone Committee appointments are part of a process to ensure a wide range of community views are reflected in water management issues. Mr Subtil and existing members Barry Shepherd, Simon Cameron and Mat Bayliss join Lisa Anderson and Jay Graybill on the committee.

Mr Subtil farms at Omarama Station, which was awarded the 2014 Supreme Award at the Canterbury Ballance Farm Environment Awards.

He has been involved in water issues for many years and played a significant role in creating the Omarama Stream Water Users Group.

The Upper Waitaki committee is one of 10 water management committees set up in 2010 and 2011 under the Canterbury Water Management Strategy to develop community-led recommendations on water.

Canterbury Water Management Strategy programme manager Christina Robb said the selection process focused on finding people who could see others' points of views and work together to find solutions for water issues.

''It's about finding the best ways to restore our environment and provide for viable farming and communities throughout the region,'' she said.
