The single-vehicle crash happened around midnight on State Highway 1 near the intersection of Hillgrove-Moeraki Rd.
A passing motorist noticed the vehicle on fire and contacted police.
Police said it appeared the northbound vehicle left a moderate right-hand bend.
The road was down to one lane while an investigatoin was carried out.
No other details were available at this time.
