Ex-pupil arrested after scuffle at annual match

One ex-pupil was arrested and other former pupils of Waitaki Boys' High School and St Kevin's College were warned by police over disorderly behaviour at the annual interschool first XV rugby match yesterday afternoon.

A scuffle between former pupils of both schools broke out during the first half of the game and police arrested a 19-year-old Oamaru man for disorderly behaviour and resisting police.

Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said that the 19-year-old was released from the police station on a pre-charge warning when he was sober.

''A couple of [other] people were warned for behaviour and language,'' Sgt Woodbridge said.

''... but on the whole everyone was pretty well behaved.''

Police liaised with teachers from both schools to keep spectators under control.

Police had no issues with present pupils of either school, Sgt Woodbridge said.

''The people warned were all ex-pupils,'' he said.

St Kevin's College first XV won the match 36-34.
