A ''million-dollar reconstruction'' of Haven St, Moeraki, was officially opened yesterday by Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher, who cut the ribbon with Waihemo Community Board member Jane Carlyon, of Moeraki.

The sums still had to be worked out, but the money given by the council, donated money, the volunteers' labour, machinery and donated construction materials would probably total more than $1million, the mayor said.

The construction manager of the volunteers who had worked on the project, Bruce Wheeler, of Palmerston, then drove his classic Morris Eight along the 200m section of the rebuilt road with leading volunteer and instigator of the reconstruction project Bill Pile, of Moeraki.

The crowd of more than 250 attending the opening walked down the road after Mr Wheeler's car.

The Waitaki District Council had put $150,000 into the reconstruction of Haven St east of David St.

The council planned to seal the road when the road surface consolidated in about six months, Mr Kircher said.

Cash donations of $130,000 had been made by the Moeraki community to the volunteers.
