A service to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Chunuk Bair is being hosted by Waitaki Boys' High School on Friday, August 7, in its Hall of Memories, built in memory of pupils who served in World War 1.
Local dignitaries, including Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher, will attend the 2pm service.
''The Battle of Chunuk Bair was one of the most tragic battles at Gallipoli and on this 100th anniversary it is important to remember the sacrifice that those soldiers made for our country,'' Mr Kircher said yesterday.
Historian Ron Palenski, of Dunedin, will deliver the keynote speech.
''His knowledge of historical events, including World War 1 and the Gallipoli campaign, will no doubt shed light on the terrible Chunuk Bair battle and the resulting casualties,'' Mr Kircher said.
Mr Kircher urged people to attend the service. Parking on the school grounds will be available.
