Cold dry weather is making it difficult to grade corrugated roads, but the Waitaki District Council is ready to go once conditions are suitable.
The state of some shingle roads has attracted comment on social media recentlyThe council's roading manager, Michael Voss, said yesterday corrugations had been caused primarily by recent dry winter conditions - a lack of moisture that helped bind the road.
''We have had very cold, dry conditions for several months and as a result corrugations on some of our unsealed roads are starting to appear,'' he said.
Once there was some more rain, the council's contractor would be able to grade the roads, but unfortunately this was not an option in the immediate future.
The deterioration could be further exacerbated by driving techniques, such as aggressive acceleration at intersections.
''Drivers can help alleviate some of the damage by slowing down sooner when approaching corners and intersections and then by slowly accelerating away.''
