A teenager is in a serious condition after being hit by a car while on a pedestrian crossing in Oamaru today.

The 15-year-old girl was hit by a northbound vehicle on State Highway 1 in a 50kmh zone in the town's north end about 11.45am, Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said.

Several members of the public rushed to the girl's aid - some giving first aid and others directing traffic - before emergency services arrived.

Sgt Woodbridge said the girl received multiple serious injuries.

She was taken to Oamaru Hospital then airlifted to Dunedin Hospital at about 2pm.

The highway was closed following the crash and a detour is in place.

The serious crash unit is investigating.
