Mediation wins the day

Staff at Rendell on Reed rest-home in Oamaru are happier after a successful mediation with management, the Service and Food Workers Union says.

Organiser Ann Galloway said she was impressed workers had stood up for themselves to get a positive result.

HIL Management Services Ltd had agreed to give staff more flexibility over their shifts.

Before, there had been a lack of consideration for those who could not work a particular shift, she said.

''It's a really good outcome.''

The union would work with the home to ensure good processes were in place to deal with any issues between staff and management.

Facility director Paul Renwick, of Wellington, said in a statement that mediation had resolved the problem.

''The process was constructive and concluded with a positive outcome.''

In addition, Age Concern Waitaki co-ordinator Wayne Stringer was running meetings with the home's residents.

''At every rest-home and hospital we own or administer there are regular resident meetings, they provide an opportunity for residents to discuss any concerns they may have with the facility.''
