Urban fire bylaw under review; feedback sought

A review of the Waitaki District Urban Fire Prevention Bylaw is under way and the Waitaki District Council is calling on the public to make submissions.

At present, the Waitaki urban fire boundaries are different from the New Zealand Fire Service boundaries.

''We believe aligning both sets of boundaries makes sense,'' Emergency Management manager Jane Lodge said.

''We'd like to know what the public think of this.''

A number of other issues are up for discussion, including how rules on starting fires in urban areas are enforced, whether fire permits are an effective way to control open fires and if a total urban fire ban should be considered.

''We'd also like to hear what people think about the environmental aspects of burning garden rubbish in the open air in urban areas,'' she said.

''It's important that our bylaw is appropriate and can be applied in a practical way.''

Ms Lodge encouraged public feedback so the council could make an informed decision.

Consultation closes on November 3.

Three informal ''drop in'' sessions have been organised as an opportunity for people to have a chat about the Waitaki District Urban Fire Prevention Bylaw and ask questions.

Drop in sessions

• October 12: Waihemo Service Centre, Tiverton St, Palmerston.

October 19: Kurow Information Centre.

October 22: Oamaru Opera House.

Sessions run from 5.30pm-6.30pm.
