Turned off vehicle's lights and fled

A 23-year-old Oamaru man turned off the lights of his vehicle and accelerated away from a police car on Saturday night, spinning the wheels and causing sparks to fly.

When he stopped in Weston's Main Rd, the 23-year-old also admitted to driving the vehicle with a sustained loss of traction in the Windsor area, which had resulted in the rear left tyre blowing out.

He said he had then driven 13km into Weston on the wheel rim.

He has been charged with driving with sustained loss of traction.

On Friday at 11.15pm, police stopped a vehicle with no lights.

Inquiries revealed the Toyota van had been stolen from a Reed St address last month.

The 19-year-old driver has been charged with receiving a stolen vehicle.

He will appear in the Oamaru District Court on October 21.
