Careless driving alleged at scene of accident

A woman has been charged with careless driving after speeding through the scene of a head-on crash at Moeraki on Monday night, allegedly almost colliding with emergency services personnel.

Acting Sergeant Nayland Smith, of Oamaru, said police were called to the crash on State Highway 1, near the Moeraki turn-off, at 6.30pm, after the foreign driver of a Toyota Estima rental vehicle attempted to complete a U-turn and was hit by a following Mazda Familia.

No injuries resulted and the crash was described as ''minor'', but the male driver was issued with an instant fine.

Police confirmed he was leaving New Zealand on October 10, but were unable yesterday to confirm where he was from.

Acting Sgt Smith said while emergency services were attending the crash, and the southbound lane of SH1 was partially blocked, a car sped past ''nearly taking out the officers that were in attendance and fire crew''.

The female driver admitted to police driving past the accident scene at 90kmh.

She has been summonsed to appear in the Oamaru District Court on October 21, charged with careless driving. Police were yesterday unable to confirm further details of the driver, including where she was from.
