Assault-accused remanded on bail

A Waimate man accused of driving a ute through a large crowd of people during a night of violence has been remanded on bail to an Oamaru address.

Daniel Leonard Vickers (27), self-employed car restorer, appeared before Judge John Strettell in the Timaru District Court yesterday and pleaded not guilty to four charges arising from an incident in Waimate on November 15 - two of assault, one of reckless driving in High St and one of drink-driving (455mcg) in High St.

Vickers allegedly recorded 455mcg of alcohol per litre of breath after the incident.

Through counsel Jay Lovely, Vickers applied for bail, after being remanded in custody without plea by Judge Joanna Maze last Friday.

Judge Maze had declined bail at Vickers' first appearance, as the offending had taken place while he was on bail in Waimate for other charges.

Mr Lovely said another bail address had become available in the Pukeuri area, north of Oamaru.

With a hearing date unlikely to be until April next year, Judge Strettell said if Vickers was remanded in custody until then, he might serve a term that was longer than a possible sentence.

Judge Strettell remanded Vickers on bail, with conditions not to travel north of the Waitaki River, to abide by a curfew from 7pm to 7am and to have no contact with witnesses, until a pre-trial conference on January 26.

One of Vickers' co-accused, Waimate man Thomas Kire (26), is charged with assault using a wooden plank as a weapon, assault using a metal pole as a weapon, and common assault.

He was remanded on bail without plea on Friday to reappear on November 27.
