Tallow tank fire at Alliance plant

Oamaru firefighters spent two hours fighting a fire in a tallow tank at the Alliance Group Pukeuri plant near Oamaru early yesterday.

Oamaru Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Steve Couper said two Oamaru fire trucks and 10 firefighters responded to an alarm at the meat works about 1.30am.

Crews cut holes in the side of the tank to access the fire that was burning between the outer tank and the inner holding tank, after fat dripped over the sides of the inner tank and caught fire.

Alliance Groups Pukeuri plant manager Geoff Proctor said no-one was hurt and there was no disruption to processing.

Plant staff were working with the Fire Service and Alliance had launched its own inquiry into the cause of the fire.
