A workman pulls in a hose from behind a cofferdam in the Water of Leith, near Montgomery Ave, in North Dunedin yesterday.

Construction works are well under way on the west bank of the Water of Leith, between Dundas and St David Sts, as part of the Leith flood protection scheme.

Earthworks at the southern end of Montgomery Ave had started, with a ramp down to the riverbed and removal of the existing concrete wall, the Otago Regional Council said.

Cofferdams for three river divisions were being installed.

The design allowed fish to pass safely, and reduced the risk to the project and the environment if a "rain event results in high flows'' in the Leith, officials said in a report to be tabled at a council committee meeting tomorrow.
