Water use restrictions

Residents connected to the Oamaru water supply will face temporary water restrictions this April.

For the second time in the past seven months, restrictions would be in place in Oamaru, Kakanui, Enfield, Ardgowan and Weston while the upgrade to the Oamaru water treatment plant was carried out, Waitaki District Council contracts engineer Michael Goldingham said.

The restrictions would run from April 10 to 17.

Washing cars and using sprinklers or soak hoses of any sort would be prohibited while the remaining filtration membranes were replaced.

The first stage of the upgrade was completed in October 2015; half of the filtration membranes were replaced and residents faced a 10-day restriction.

The $1.2million project to replace membrane filters at the plant was expected to save the council $300,000 in replacement costs and $100,000 each year in operating costs as the new membranes could clean and filter 25% more water and were expected to last 10 years as opposed to seven.
