Mum, baby killed in crash near Twizel

Southern police are continuing to investigate a serious crash near Twizel that killed a Christchurch mother and her eight-month-old son.

Emergency services were called to the two-car crash at the intersection of State Highway 8 and McAughtries Rd, just south of Twizel, about 6.50pm yesterday.

Mon Chhetri (37) and her baby Aaron Chhetri died, while five others in the vehicles were injured.

Police said this morning that initial inquiries indicated the vehicle the Chhetris were in was approaching the highway.

They said the 44-year-old driver had slowed at the intersection and pulled out on SH8 into the path of an oncoming vehicle travelling south towards Omarama.

The driver and the other occupant, a 10 year-old girl, were injured, as well as three people in the second vehicle.

Two Otago Regional Rescue Helicopters, three ambulances and a rapid response unit attended.

A St John spokesman said two people with serious injuries were flown to Dunedin Hospital yesterday.

Two people with moderate to serious injuries were flown to Christchurch Hospital.

A person with minor to moderate injuries was taken to Timaru Hospital by ambulance.

A serious crash investigation was continuing.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said SH8 had reopened this morning, but would be down to one lane from 9.30am and there would be delays.
