Driver flees after crash causes power cut

Police are appealing for the public's help after power was knocked out in part of North Otago last night.

Residents in semi-rural North Otago heard a "loud bang" before losing power for nearly two hours.

Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said a vehicle collided with a power pole with a transformer at Awamoa Rd near Stonewall Rd about 11pm.

Some debris, including a vehicle's bumper, were left at the scene of the crash about 3km south of Oamaru.

The power pole broke in half, but the driver fled the scene, Sgt Woodbridge said.

"It's obviously a substantial impact."

Police had checked with the hospital and there was no indication of any injuries in the crash, he said.

They were speaking with garages to determine the make and model of the vehicle.

Network Waitaki network manager David Paterson said 325 customers were without power for just over an hour-and-a-half following the crash.

Power was still out for one customer fed from the pole that was hit, but Mr Paterson said it was expected to be re-connected by midday.
