Police are hunting for the driver of this vehicle, who they say put lives and property at risk in downtown Oamaru on Monday afternoon.

About 2.30pm a 1991 Holden Commodore ute sped past a police unit, triggering a pursuit.

Sergeant, Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said the driver of the ute sped erratically into Wear St, overtaking a truck and trailer unit in the face of oncoming traffic. It then sped up and skidded into Thames St, then into Itchen St through the CBD.

The vehicle failed to stop for police. The pursuit was abandoned in Itchen St because it was considered too dangerous to continue.

The ute was located a short time later in Orwell St, behind a church.

Sgt Woodbridge estimated the fleeing vehicle reached speeds between 80kmh and 100kmh in the 50kmh zone.

‘‘If something had gone wrong and there was a collision, someone would have been seriously injured or killed with the way the driving was.''

Police inquiries were continuing. They had contacted the registered owner of the vehicle and hoped to find the driver soon.
