Be wary, South Hill residents told

Oamaru police are seeking a man who fled a South Hill home after being discovered inside when the occupant returned home on Sunday morning.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy, of Oamaru, said police were looking for a man in his late teens or early 20s, with dark skin and dark, wavy, medium-length hair.

The Hull St resident "came home and found him in the house'', Snr Sgt McCoy said.

He said police were asking South Hill residents to lock their doors and keep an eye out for suspicious activity after a series of incidents over the weekend.

On Saturday or Sunday night, a mailbox was stolen from a Perth St home, and at some point between Friday afternoon and Sunday an urn was taken from a deck at a home in Test St.

During the weekend, police also responded to an attempted burglary at the Lower Waitaki Golf Club in Hilderthorpe Rd that occurred overnight on Friday or Saturday.

On Saturday, police arrested a 32-year-old man, who was charged with wilful damage and male assaults female.

He is scheduled to appear in the Oamaru District Court tomorrow.
